Blown Soundcard/Motherboard ?
Hello and thanks for taking a look here.
Unfortunately I don't have the offending laptop at the mo....it's my son's...but hopefully this enquiry is general enough not to require specific info.
He recently plugged a stereo jack into the audio out socket, the other end of which was connected to his AV Amp.
There was a flash, quite a shock, the mains power adaptor blew and the laptop immediately had a high pitched whine to one output channel, totally dead on the other.
This whine is of course present on the laptop internal speakers when the jack plug is removed.
It can be stopped by panning to the dead channel , setting the volume to zero or disconnecting the speakers on the sound device.
I connected a USB soundcard and the speakers default to this device but still the same noise and dead channel.
My local friendly pc shop suggest that !the board has blown and with a quote of `around £250 I assume he meant the motherboard.
But he then said that a PCMCIA (or whatever it's called) soundcard would bypass the problem where the USB card didn't.
These cards are not particularly cheap and double the ebay price at my local shop.
If I buy it from ebay and it fails to solve the problem then I've wasted my money although I would obviously resell it on ebay. Buy it at my local and the guy will just stuff it in and take it out again should it prove pointless.
So......is he right, wrong or otherwise please
Thanks/Steve
