Default [Answered] Left sound channel not working

Hi,

I want to use my 360 games console on my computer monitor so I bought a vga lead for it and all works well apart from the sound. I have connected the vga cable's audio lead into the back of my computer (via the 3.5mm audio-in socket) and I only get sound from the right side when listening on my headphones (plugged into the front 3.5mm audio-out socket).

I know the headphones and VGA lead are working correctly because I have tried it on another systems. Listning to music from the PC's own sound if fine, both left and right work fine.

My computer is running WindowsXP.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Rob.

Hello Rob123, welcome to PCHF.

Not sure what cable your using there, Its sounds like your most likely using a mono lead instead of a stereo one. Some systems will recognise that you have a mono lead attached, others won't and will output to the right channel as you've described.

Have a look at your connections, a mono lead will have a single black line towards the front of the jack, whilst a stereo will have two.

Mono Example:

Hi madmonkey, thanks for your help.

I've just checked the connector, and it does have two black stripes on it. The vga lead i'm using has the red and white phono audio leads and they are plugged into an adapter like the one below. I've used this adapter on my T.V and it works in full stereo and outputs to both channels. The adapter is plugged into the blue 3.5mm socket on my computer, which says 'audio in'.

No problems. There are still a few other things to check.

- First of all, go to My Computer, Control Panel, Sound and Audio Devices.
- Click Advanced. If you see "Line In" here, check your "Balance" is in the center between your left and right channels. [X] close when complete.
- Under the Voice tab, click on Volume under "Voice Recording", and check your balance there also.

If you find no problems there, can you give me the "Default Device" listed under "Voice Recording", and are then any others listed when you click on that dropdown menu?

I've checked the settings as you described and the balance sliders are all in the middle.

The voice recording devices are:

Realtek HD front pink jack (selected)
Realtek HD digital input
Realtek HD front green jack
Back line in/mic, front line in

Rob.

Just tried all of the different devices and they're all the same, working on the right side only.
