Default [Answered] Only Showing Graphic Card's Audio Device

I recently installed a new graphics card ('cause my last one died on me), and now I don't have any sound. I went into the controls panels under Sounds and Audio Devices and it only displays the option to use the sound device on my graphics card. All of a sudden, my RealTek sound device (located on my motherboard) has disappeared.

Does this make sense to anybody? How do I get my sound to work?

Hello broomstick, welcome to PCHF.

Sound.. from a graphics card? hmm, what graphics card do you have, I've never heard of this?

When you replaced your graphics card, did you use the same slot, and what it PCI, AGP or PCI-Express?

It's a Radeon HD 2600XT... it doesn't actually process sound, but it will pass HD sound through an HDMI cable (if I had it hooked up to an HD TV or monitor).

The card uses a PCI-Express slot.

I submitted a ticket with ATI and they told me to reinstall my onboard audio drivers and make sure my BIOS has onboard audio turned on, which I'll try once I get home from work.

Hopefully that'll work, but knowing my luck, it won't.

That would be pritty much my only suggestion to. If Windows detected the device, you would either have a "Found New Hardware" wizard appear each time you switch your PC on, or you would see the devices waiting to be installed in Device Manager. The only way you can enable/disable it at a software level outside of Windows is in BIOS.

Yep, that did it!

Now I just have to figure out how to allocate more RAM to my graphics card. Any ideas?

Hey broom, good to hear.

As for your graphics, you won't be able to allocate more RAM than is already onboard. You can only allocate more memory to graphics chipsets that are onboard the motherboard itself. Since you have a Radeon 2600XT, which is a seperate entity from your motherboard (PCI-Express), it is not possible without replacing the card itself.

EDIT: Marked as Answered.
