External sound problem
Hello everyone, I am hoping someone can help with the problem I'm having. I'll tell you everything I know in hopes you will be able to solve it. Here goes:
I got a computer from where I work (Compaq Evo) that was running extremely slow and someone suggested I put a new hard drive in it (they were throwing it out). I had a brand new Maxtor 80GB drive laying around, so I put it in and installed WinXP Professional. Everything works fine except the sound. The internal computer speaker works, but when I plug in my external speakers into the rear jack, they don't work (and the internal speaker obviously cuts off) so I have zero sound. When I unplug them, the internal speaker comes back on and I have sound again. I know the external speakers work (I plugged them into my other computer - no problems), I have been to Compaq's driver site and I have the correct one, I checked and double-checked all of my settings (devices enabled, levels up, nothing on mute) so the only thing I can think of is maybe the rear jack is not working correctly. The speakers are Boston Acoustics and they sound really good, I hate for them to go to waste. The sound card is part of the motherboard so IF that is the problem should I just get another sound card? I hope this is enough information and thank you in advance to anybody who has an idea.
