Unhappy C-Media is soundless

Hi All,
The problem I've got is this, I've got onboard sound (I believe it to have the C-Media CMI9738 chipset) which emits no sound and is showing a warning in Device Manager. I've run the troubleshooter to no avail, I've tried to update the driver to be told no newer driver available, it makes no difference if I reinstall the driver I still get no sound. What do I do next to make the **** thing play? I'd be grateful for a solution
Ian

The yellow questionmark indicates most likely a driverproblem. Dit you install the most recent driver, downloaded from the manufacturers website? : C-Media Driver Downloads- Step 1 | C-Media Electronics

You can also, if the latest driver from the previous site didn't work, try this one: Download C-media CMI9738 UDA 039 Driver for Windows XP - Softpedia

I've downloaded both of these files and AVG is reporting an embeded trojan so I'll not run them. I'm back to square one again
Thanks

Thanks
