My Toshiba portege 720ct laptop has got a mic, in but I need a stereo line in. It runs on windows 98 and it has a usb port, is there anyway that I can get a stereo in. I'm using a fostex 8 track and need to upload my songs onto the laptop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It comletely depends on what release of Windows you have there. If it's the initial release, then there's no chance, as 98 does not support USB. Microsoft did release a fix, but only work for some very few devices, such as mice.

If it's Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), then I believe that there are still some external USB sound devices that will work!! These devices normally cost around £15.

Check your version of Windows by going to Start, Run, and type in winver

Just make sure it's Windows 98 compatible before you buy. The are also referred to as external usb sound box's or external sound cards. I guess none of these manufactuers could ever find a proper name for it!
