My wife's pc had a critical error and rebooted (I did not catch the error) and I had to use the Windows XP disc to repair the system before it would reboot completely. Since then there has been no sound. The AC97 is there but there is no audio device when I bring up the sounds and audio devices tab. I deleted the drivers and re-installed them from Realtek and still no sound. Since I have onboard sound I thought it was fried so I bought a sound card and installed it (disabling the onboard sound in the bios). I still have no sound device listed. I have ensured the drivers for the Diamond sound card are up to date but still no luck. I am running a 2.8GHz Pentium 4, XP pro. Any help would be appreciated.

Just an update. I removed the new sound card, removed all the sound drivers, used driver cleaner, cleaned the registry, rebooted and reinstalled the onboard sound. It shows up in the sounds and audio devices but I still have no sound and the speaker selection is greyed out as is the audio device.
