Default Fan volume - a sound concern for new PC

I am about to build a machine and have selected the case fans, PSU, mobo fan and video card largely by the number of decibels they put out. The PC is to be used for audio recording/editing and I am wondering about using fluid cooled heatsinks or passive components. Any 'how to' guide pointers would be welcomed.

Is there a way to calculate the amount of background noise the PC would make when at full stroke ? Presumably I can not simple add all the db values together.

Thanks.
JR

Liquid cooling is something you really don't need to get into unless your doing some extreme over clocking, you will also have some noise with liquid cooling (the pump makes noise, as do MOST radiators)

If you told us the specs of the system when we could probably help you more but here's a general idea.

Firstly, if it's going to be used for audio editing, do you need a top end video card? get a slightly older passively cooled video card as chances are it'd run cooler then new ones so passive would be more efficient.

You can get passively cooled power supplies but they are expensive, 'silent' power supplies are pretty good.

Get a case with good air flow such as the Antec P182, which is also fairly quiet due to design, you can also get sound dampening mats, or use generic acoustic dampening stuff.

Get a replacement heatsink such as the Asus Silent Square which aren't totally silent because the fan is still ther but almost there, they're quieter because the heatsink has better cooling properties than a stock heatsink.

Get 'silent' case fans, silent with any fan is misleading as they're not totally silent but as above, they're almost there and with acoustic dampening you won't hear it.

A lot of the noise in a pc comes from crappy vibration dampening in cases, install rubber grommets in fan holes, drive mounting holes etc.

Water cooling is likely to be expensive and not exactly what you want, go with air, get a better heatsink and fans all round, install acoustic dampening stuff, rubber gromets around things likely to vibrate, get whatever passive stuff you can and it will be pretty close to quiet. You may also benefit from a fan controller so you can turn the case fans down when needed.

Plus unless your computer is extremely loud, I doubt you'd be able to hear it over the monitors and I doubt mics would pick it up.

Hope this helps a little.

That all looks cool, is the computer just to be used for audio stuff?

Plus this is just personaly preference but I'd look at some M-Audio stuff as apposed to the X-Fi.

As a home entertainment unit. Possibly with an extender in the living room.
