Smile speaker installation

Dear Forum

First time here. I have just purchased and attached a pair of Logitech X-140 speakers. I have checked them, they work fine with my MP3 player, my sound card is OK as I use Skype with a headset, however, the computer just won't acknowledge that I have speakers attached. The taskbar icon says No audio output device is installed. It doesn't appear in Device Manager, I don't know what else to try.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Keep it simple, as although I'm fairly adept in software terms, I'm very much an end-user, it has to work or I'm no use.
