Default New 5.1 speakers not working right.

Ok i am using onboard sound (yes i know it goes against every rule but) My motherboard is a A8N 32x Abit and the speakers i bought were the Logitech 540 5.1 SS speakers.

Problem is, is that when i can actually get all speakers working the rear speakers are so low it might as well just be 2.1. Ive tried the new Drivers from Nvidia and Abit but to no avail.

Im guessing that this is just an onboard audio problem but besides that any ideas?

Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks!

Hey Don,

I don't beleive that I've had the pleasure, my welcome to PCHF. I'm sure we can figure out what is causing the levels to be so low.

When you go into the Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel, Speaker Settings, and click on Advanced, you should show your speaker setup to be 5.1, and under the Performance tab, both Hardware accelleration, and Sample rate conversion quality should be set at maximum.

Then under Speaker Volume, you should have the ability to adjust the speaker volume individually.

If these settings aren't showing as described, please let us know what is showing. Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Thanks for the fast reply.

You must mean the 'Speaker Volume' tab under Speaker Settings. It only has Left and Right Speakers. Problem im guessing. The other stuff i did.

Hey Don,

No problem, we try to be quick.

Actually, I mean the Sounds and Audio Devices, Speaker Settings on the Volume tab. If the volume is only showing two then your computer is not set up for your 5.1. That's why you need to change it with the Advanced button under Speaker Settings.

If you use the XP version of Control Panel, that would be, Sounds, Speach and Audio Devices, Change the Speaker Settings, Advanced, under Speaker Setup choose 5.1.

Is that what you did before?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Yes ive done all that. Could multiple audio drivers be conflicting? I also remember when i first got them i had to set it to 7.1 to get the back speakers to work.

Also i have the Sound Manager that comes with the Nvidia drivers or the Motherboard Manufacturer drivers and it has an "auto test" feature where it will run through all your speakers and play a sound but when it plays the back 2 nothing and when it shows the middle satelite speakers and the subwoofer then the back 2 speakers work. Make any sense? Im formatting very soon so ill probably just try and fix it then and hopefully its just something with the drivers.

Thanks again.

Yes, that makes sense, you explained it perfectly

My concern is that there is a controller conflict, one of the controllers is not allowing the PC to recognize that there are 5 not two speakers, no matter where you are, it should show 5.1. I'm assuming that you've already tried the 7.1 trick and it didn't work.

I think it's time to call on my Tech Team leader, it would sure be alot easier on you if you knew what the problem was prior to your reinstall. He should be on before too long, I'll PM him and ask him to take a look.

Keep an eye out for his post,

TTFN
