Question [Answered] Sound Not Working

Hi, I have a bit of a problem with getting sound to work.

Last Night I received a used computer, in some ways, better than the one I already had. This computer had a virused harddrive running Windows 2000, so I simply took out that harddrive and put in my harddrive from my other computer (had a fresh install of 98 SE on it) and connected it.

After encountering various problems, first I had to find a driver for the video card, then I had to take my network card from my old computer and switch it with this one to get the internet working, it seems now I finally got everything working except for Sound.

On my other PC, the sound worked fine, so I know there's no problems with my sound card on that one, or my speakers.

On this PC, I'm not sure if the soundcard works or not. It seems to have the drivers for it because when I go to Multimedia and view the properties it seems to recognize the card as Creative Awe. However I cannot get the sound to work. For some reason or another too, there is a chord running from the CD ROM drive to this soundcard?

So I took out my other soundcard which is a Crystal brand, and plugged it into an open slot beside the other sound card. Now in my head I cannot understand why the sound still is not working if I'm using the harddrive that has the drivers for my Crystal card, and worked on my other PC, but for somereason won't work now?

I don't know if it has something to do with having two soundcards plugged in at the same time? but like I said there is a chord running from the CD rom to the Awe soundcard, and I cannot see a plugin on my Crystal card for that chord.

I just removed the Creative AWE soundcard and now the sound works on the Crystal one like it should.

All I'm wondering now is what is that chord from the CD Rom drive to the Creative Soundcard for? and why isn't there a plugin on my Crystal card.

Hello Jordoe,

I'm suprised you managed to get the PC working using the OS from your old PC. Not an easy thing to do since the hardware between the two PC's would have been so much different, and even if you do manage to get it working, there is normally a drop in performance. Windows 98 isn't so bad, but you normally have to reload the OS - good work there!

The cable running between the CD-ROM and soundcard is for audio CD's. Pritty much all soundcards have these connections, but there are two different types of connections. Both 4 pin, but one is smaller than the other. The larger of the two is generally used.

Would you say the Creative AWE Tech 94' (1997) (larger of the two soundcards) is a better soundcard than the Crystal (smaller soundcard)?

I've seen some good Crystal cards, do you have a model number of that card?

I don't think this is really answered since his sound is still not working, if I am not mistaken. You just explained what the audio cable was for.

Rodents,

Read his last two paragraphs. He has already said his sound is now working. His thread is a question not a problem. Jordoe had thanked but not replied to his last post post in 2 weeks, so unless there are any further questions, this thread is marked as answered.

Thank you and have a pleasant day!
