Hi baboon,

Other codecs do tend to enhance sound quality, but there are disadvantages to downloading difference codec's, as you noticed, but some codec packs even contain some pritty nasty virus's and/or malware, so you do need to be careful.

However, there are things you can do in the applications themselves to enhance your sound. For example, if your using Windows Media Player:

Right click on the title and/or click on Tools, View, Enhancements and click on Show Enhancements.

At the bottom of the screen, normally starts with "Video Settings" but you can click on the < or > buttons to scroll between Video Settins, to your Graphic Equaliser to SRS WOW Effects.

Have a play with these settings. You can also download DSP plugin's but I haven't found a good free one for Windows Media Player.

You'll find similar features with a lot of players.
