Default Sound not working even though sound card installed

Hi there - I just got a *new* PC - one of my friends put together a bunch of odds & ends and gave it to me. The only problem is - no sound! The sound card is installed, and the system profile says it is working properly. I have downloaded all applicable updates from Windows Update, and my speakers are plugged into the PC and the wall outlet. What can I do? I'm running Windows ME.

Welcome to PCHf

Is there any way that you can use headphones or try the speakers on another PC just to prove that there really is no sound output from your card?

Hi there - I did that and they do work. I just figured something out. I don't think my sound card is installed. The PC says one is installed and working properly, but also says that there is a PCI Multimedia Audio Device. When I click on Properties for that device, it says the drivers are not installed. I've installed them twice. I removed the one the PC says is working properly and rebooted, and every time I do that it goes right back under sound. I tried going to the manufacturer website for my sound card to download the drivers, and I'm getting this message: ActiveX control failed to load! -- Please check browser security settings or ensure that you have administrator rights.

We only have one PC - no log ons, so Administrator rights aren't the issue. Where can I go to fix my ActiveX problem so I can fix my sound problem?
