What is the purpose of having sound on the modem. Is it ever used instead of a sound card

Default installing modem always installs sound wave
when you install a modem, sound features are always added, what for

Default Sound on modem
Hi ka_mcginnis,

The only reason that I have ever thought of for there being sound from the modem is to "show" that it is dialling out. I have had a small look around and another reason might be that some modems come with software that allows you to use the modem as an answering machine and so you would need sound out to deliver the voicemail message.
