Default Popping noise from speakers

I have an annoying problem with my speakers making a "popping" sound-- almost like a wire being unplugged from an amplifier. It occurs sporadically-- there will be an hour of quiet followed by this noise for 3-4-5 times (5 minutes apart) then nothing again... always when the machine is idle/under light use. I don't know if it's driver issue/an XP issue/ a hardware problem. I am running Win XP Home SP2 ALL updates. I have a M-Audio Revolution 5.1--with the latest driver --and Logitech Z5500 speakers. I emailed their tech-support but got no response yet. The card and speakers are brand new. Most of the time -- I just mute the thing when I'm not using it, but I shouldn't have to do that. Never had this issue with my audigy2 LS-- I am thinking of switching back.:undecided

Hey "Bills",

That sounds incredibly annoying. Are the speakers connected by wires or is this system wireless?

Have you checked out your sound system both in device manager, and within the properties of the speaker's sound?

The fact that it is intermittent tends to rule out anything software related, it makes me think that there is some short in your wires, if you have wires, and that they are popping at you.

Look forward to your reply,

Speakers are wired... as is whole system-- I'm not a big "wireless fan" for both security/speed reasons. I know what wardriving is  -- I just don't trust anything going out via a transmitter-- nor do my needs require it.

The noise almost sounds like something in my system "logging off" or going into "standyby"-- then restarting. Not really a loud sound- but frustrating cause I can't find it. I'll keep looking though --if nothing else I am stubborn.

Wire bleed-over IS possible-- but as I said --I never had this issue with my sound-blaster card-- and it's the SAME computer installed in exactly the same place. The only thing that has changed is these 2 pieces of hardware/their accompanying software.

 Cool, I'm an old school speaker wire sort of girl myself, so I am assuming that you've run the wires for breaks. We'll rule that out.

Is it all of the time, or is it happening say after the PC is on for a certain amount of time, or when you are surfing, etc. I can't imagine what program would check in and out that would affect your speakers. Also, is it a loud sound or is it an undertone? Have you checked the connection to the PC, could it have come loose somehow?

Look forward to your reply,

It happens both when surfing/and when the puter is in standby. It's volume depends on what the speakers volume control is set at. It is loud comapred to the normal 'background'/there is no hum at all from the system. I may check Logitech support --see if they have anything. I did find a thread on lockergnome referring to this type of issue-- the problem was supposedly caused by Windows Messenger being behind a NAT firewall-- which I AM-- but I'm not running messenger-- for 1-- and this is an OLD update-- supposedly the problem was fixed in SP ONE-- I am running SP2.

:o WM? OK, on the off off chance that Win Mes could possibly have anything to do with that, and to make sure that you have it disabled, (it leaves you vulnerable to popup attacks), download and run Shoot the Messenger.

Other then that, I think I am out of ideas. Let's get Joe5 involved, he is our supersleuth, I am just a lowly HR person , lol. Seriously tho, he is uncanny. I will PM him. I am sure he will be back in the next several hours, he's Dutch.

Look forward to any updates.
