I recently reinstalled Windows 98 SE on this PC and there is not sound. It worked before I did this install. I did install SoundMax Sound drivers. Please note that i did not have the manufacturer's restore disk so I had to install from the generic Windows 98 CD. The device manager does not show any problem but I cannot get Sndvol32 to come up in my tray.

Please advise if you can help.

I think you may have installed the incorrect sound card driver, could you go into Add/Remove programs and uninstall anything to do with Soundmax.

Hi, I was able to resolve the problem. I used the wrong sound drivers. The onboard sound device was the Aureal 8810, and the correct driver file is SD_AU8810_Win98. After installing these drivers, I was able to get sound.
