Default I've lost system sounds aswell!!!

Hi there and first off can I say that I've now got this site in my favs folder and well done to all who help out on here.

Right I've also lost my sounds (Seems a lot of that problem recently judging by the requests/probs posted across the net)

I can play cd/dvd no problem but I've no sounds in windows

I've got a dell 5100 with onboard sound (no sperate card) and I've downloaded far too much software to check for trojans/virus etc though I've probably used all the wrong ones :-(

It's not life or death this one but it is nippy

I've also read through all the other 'lost sounds' threads and tried the options given but to no avail.

this may sound strange, kid you not have i've seen this happen many times:grin:

first check all media players e.g.: realplayer, Windows Media Player, etc (anything you play music with) that all sound volume is set high enough. And then see if you get your sound back

Hi there and thanks for the reply zugolg, I've tried the usual suspect devices/cures but to no avail and TBH my problem is very very similar to the one Rachel had in the thread linked below...only thing is Rachels got fixed whereas mine is still goosed

Hi zugolg, no change to my sounds dude .....though.... due to a tip in one of the many software progs I used in the links you provided, I increased the refresh rate of my monitor upto 75% so although I still can't hear whilst in windows it's now got a lot sharper picture to it O0 :computer_

Although I've enabled the volume icon in the taskbar nothing shows up there and in the properties pagewhere you can try the sounds the play button is greyed out. I've a feeling the sounds have been moved or deleted but I wouldn't know where to start looking for them.

All the programmes I've run, which includes SiSoftSandra, say that everything is working fine.
I've also tried system restore and although it goes through the motions it finishes with 'Cannot restore' no changes made.

As I've said sounds are ok in media players, even embedded into windows, but not windows itself and no macromedia sounds either, I've just noticed.

Regards
Brian

Hve you used any programs that can make changes to the resgistry?

If you're missing a system file it may not seem to affect the performance but these little knackers tend to surface.

Did you try the sfc /scannow?

I've ran a couple of reg cleaners mate. I've not run sfc /scannow as it happens and I've not got XP on disc either, only the cd's that came with the PC.
Dell Dimension 5100 BTW
