Did your previous motherboard have onboard sound? if not try downloading the latest drivers for your sound card.

If your not sure of the make of your sound card use the Belarc advisor found here: http://www.belarc.com/Programs/advisor.exe

first thing, just try another earphone or something to make 100% sure it's not about your speakers
secondly, if you're using an on-board soundcard (this means that you're not using a PCI card, so the connector will be located somewhere around your printer, usb ports, then try to use install disc you get with your mainboard
if you're using a card so the connectors will be not around your mainboard connectors, try to locate it with as posted by MadGamer Belarc Advisor, you find any use windows wizard Add new hardware

right, i have tried using headphones and they dont seem to work.. also i have put my speakers into another computer and they seem to be working fine.. i have tried using the disk which came with the board, but it still doesnt seem to work.. before i installed the drivers from the disk i got a message when trying to play music through media player saying there is no mixer device present and it wouldnt play the song, now the mixer device is installed it says its playing but there is no sound coming through the speakers or earphones.. the model of motherboard im using is 'KM400/KM400A chipset based' and i am using a mixer device called 'Avance ac97 audio'.. thanks for your replies so far

Small thing but can you double-click on the sound icon (near the clock - bottom right) and check that all the levels are up and there is nothing set to "mute".

Another small thing that we somtimes forget.. Did you plug it into the correct input? Line in ... It will have a green outline around it.
