Did you check you levels in the volume section? I turned my speakers up for a bitto listen to a song and when I clicked refresh a pop came through. Maybe you have the volume level up to much?

The only other thing I could think of is to Uninstall your internet explorer and then re-install it. You can do this through control panel - Add/Remove programs
I am having the same issues except that it is not just when I use the internet but when I use any program it will cause all sound to skip. Also sound is skipping when I log on to machine. It seems to have started when I upgraded to IE 7. Unfortunatly when I try to remove IE 7 all I get is something about an invalid handle.
