Default [Pending] LOST VOLUME CONTROL-HELP!

I installed a multimedia recording application and lost my volume control. I've done the obligatory "expand sndvol32.ex_ " cmd business and it successfully restored my sndvol132.exe file (went from 56489 bytes to 138752 bytes). Rebooted and still no volume control! When going into Sounds & Audio Devices in the Control Panel, all is greyed out. HELP - I can't even listen to music on Rhapsody - I don't know what else to do but reinstall OS. I'd really like to avoid that! Please advise! Thanks! JW

Welcome to PCHF

Right click on "My Computer" > properties > hardware > device manager > look at the "sound video and game controllers" section - do you have anything there that isn't installed properly (i.e: a yellow exclamation mark) ?
