Default [Answered]New PC, tactic to avoid viruses, etc

Hi,

I will be getting a new PC. I don't intend to use e-mail on this computer but I do plan to go on the internet with it, to download and possibly upload files. I am reasonably web savvy and have been surfing for about 10 years on a Mac.

If I don't use e-mail and stay away from obvious trouble will I be likely to avoid viruses and other problems? I will be very selective about where I go and download only that which is necessary for the work I will do on that machine, uploading only revised web pages for a non-profit website.

Many thanks for any help.

Cheers,

John L

To be honest it's not that big of a deal.

Using email is fine just don't open attachments from people you don't know and scan attachments before opening them.

Just schedule a scan say once a week and scan anything from unknown sources and you will be fine.

What I generally do is set scheduling once a week for antivirus, spyware scans to a time when I won't be using the computer and just leave it to do its thing and use a program such as IOBit smartdefrag or disk keeper to defrag on the fly so I never have to worry about it really.

But yeah, in short, schedule scans and scan files from an unknown source and you will be fine and it is a lot more unobtrusive than manual scanning/defraging all the time.
