do you have them all runing as well in the tray at the bottom or do they need to be run when i want to do a scan??
As a general rule of thumb, you should only have one anti-virus program and a firewall running at a single time. This will greatly reduce potential conflicts between similar programs that venture deep into the system kernel. Most free anti-spyware programs do not give you the option to enable real-time protection, but keeping them within the system as on-demand scanners is advisable.

also while im on what is a fire wall someone told me the window one isnt that good
Windows Firewall only offers inbound protection, that is, the filtering of information coming from the internet.
I suggest you read the Firewalls FAQ I wrote:

There is an elaborate answer to your question, as well as some general information every user should know.

Dunno what ya'll say about it but I'm pretty satisfied with Hitman Pro for anti-virus and anti-spyware. This program is a bundle of several anti-virus and anti-spyware programs:
Eset NOD32 antivirus system (trial, expires in 30 days)
Webroot Spy Sweeper (trial, expires in 7 days)
PC tools Spyware doctor (demo, will not clean anything)
Lavasoft AdAware SE (freeware)
Safer Networking Spybot - Search & Destroy (freeware)
TrendMicro CWShredder (freeware)
JavaCool Software SpywareBlaster (freeware)
McAfee SuperDAT Virusscan (McAfee Primesupport license required, do NOT use when you're not a McAfee customer, since you do not have such a license using the scan is illegal)
Ewido Micro Scanner (freeware)
It automatically downloads the programs and their updates.
BTW: i don't know if it is available in any other language as Dutch (e.g. English)....

It's OK to have both AV and antispyware running-- you do want to have a firewall as well...
They do different things-- but the firewall is your primary defense against everything. It's your security door. AV and AS remove stuff that sneaks past the Firewall. They help block as well... but the firewall is 1st.
