Securing your Windows PC

Ok the first steps to securing your Windows PC is to remove any spyware/malware/dialers. To do this you will need a number of tools that are listed below.

? Ewido Security Suite: (ewido - anti-spyware and anti-malware solutions)
? Microsoft Windows Anti-Spyware:
? Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4: (The home of Spybot-S&D!)
? Ad Aware SE Personal 1.06: (Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition - Free Software Downloads and Software Reviews - Download.com)
? HiJackThis: (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip)

NOTE: If you are unsure of how to use HiJackThis, please look at Prework.

Now its time to get some protection on your system, by installing some spyware protection. Some of the programs I?ve mentioned above also offer protection and these are:

? Microsoft Windows Anti-Spyware
? Spybot Search & Destroy 1.4

Additional programs for protection as well as the ones listed above can be downloaded from the following locations:

? Spywareblaster 3.4: (SpywareBlaster Download)
? SpywareGuard 2.2: (SpywareGuard Download)

Ok now that you have removed the spyware and protected yourself, its time to do a virus scan:

Recommended FREEWARE programs:

Avast Anti Virus: (redirection)
AVG Anti Virus: (http://www.grisoft.cz/softw/70/filed...0f_338a597.exe)

WARNING: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU RUN BOTH THE ANTISPYWARE AND VIRUS SCANNERS IN SAFE MODE.

Booting your PC into Safe Mode:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

After you have performed these scans, proceed to download any updates from Windows Update.

It is also useful to have a firewall, on your PC even if you have a dialup connection, you can obtain a firewall from these sites:

Zone Alarm: (Check Point ZoneAlarm - Internet security products, online safety, software, protection)
Outpost: (http://www.agnitum.com/download/outpost1.html)
Sygate: (http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm)
Kerio: (Antispyware, Antispam, Email Security)
Tiny: (Tiny Personal Firewall Download FREE)
