Unhappy Brief Burst of Power

Hi all.

I've been having some odd power issues with my computer recently. I came to turn the computer on one day and nothing would happen. It had worked not long before and I hadn't changed any hardware for a good while.

I immediately thought the power supply had gone so I opened it up, but the light on the motherboard was still on. I then thought maybe the power button had gone. The weird thing is, if I remove the power supply connection to the motherboard and then put it back in, pressing the power button gives the computer power for about 1/4 second. It then does nothing on pressing it again, until I repeat the same procedure, removing the power supply connection to the motherboard and putting it back in. Some motherboard capacitor issue?

More worrying is that I gave 2 hard disks to a friend who says that they are both dead. Has my power supply destroyed my computer!? I've tried using another one and it worked for a while but then the same problem returned. I then returned to the original power supply and that then worked for a while but then the problem returned. Weird...

I don't know if there's a lot that can be done apart from just trying a new motherboard. My intention was to sell this computer so I don't want to throw too much money at the problem until I have a good idea of what is wrong. I've only had the power supply for a year or two. I built the rest of the computer about 2 and a half years ago. Any ideas? It's odd that the motherboard light comes on; are there any parts that I could probe with a voltmeter?

Thanks

If you hold the power connector (20 pin) down firmly then power the PC on and hold it in place does the computer stay powered?

I had a similar problem where the motherboard was contacting with the case. Try taking the motherboard out and when you put it back in make sure to use all standoffs available and that they are screwed in properly and not at an angle or anything funny like that.

Of course if holding the power button in does no good then it sounds like your PSU has gone bad. Try replacing it in that case.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Holding the connector down does not make a difference. It isn't loose. I tried removing the motherboard and checked for any contact but no luck. I'm sure I tried another power supply and had the same problem (it's a bit hard to remember because this happened months ago). I'm wondering whether the motherboard is broken and it's not the power supply actually. It wouldn't surprise me, it'll be the third Asus motherboard I've had that's died

I've had problems with ASUS boards myself but never had a problem powering them per se.

What seems to happen for me is that everything powers on but POST doesn't run and there's no display on the monitor.

I have heard and read in the ASUS manual that they are very particular about what memory they will accept. However, since your computer isn't even powering on long enough to run the POST (power-on self test) then RAM probably isn't the issue).

Maybe try with one less RAM stick or disconnect your CD drive. There's a small chance that you have low rated power supply (eg 200-300W) and too much hardware.

eg 2 or 3 hard drives, graphics cards etc.

This guide explains how to test your power supply using a paper clip.

How To: Jump Start A Power Supply (PSU) / Test A Power Supply And Components - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

If the power supply stays powered using that method then it is working. However, if the PSU only spins for a few seconds then stops then you can be quite sure the PSU is at fault.

I don't use multimeters myself so can't help you with that. Although there will probably be an instructional video on youtube.

The paper clip test should give you an idea of whether the PSU or motherboard is at fault.

If you are considering a new motherboard then I have found ASRock ones to be very good.

Hi DrDon,

Do you still need help with this?

If so, could you please let us know if you tried Amtech's suggestions of removing ram and testing the psu?

Hi there. Thanks for that paperclip test, not seen that before. I tried it and the PSU came on for about 10 seconds then went off. It won't come on again when I try it again. I'm guessing it is the power supply that's at fault then, but I would have thought it wouldn't have come on at all. I'll buy another one and see if that fixes it...

Cheers
