Unhappy Opinions would be very greatly appreciated :)

Hello guys I am new, so pardon me if i'm a little rusty at all this computer chat ^-~
I have an advent 7098. It was second hand when I got it, and is pretty old. I wont bother putting in any details about the hardware at this stage, because it's all very basic stuff. I just would really like to hear some diagnosis
My laptop had a charger problem. The jack got looser and looser, until it would barely work. I have had some pervious experiance with a soldering iron, and i read tuorials on how to fix the problem.
It took quite a while, but i managed to solder the points correctly. I also managed to loose a screw to hold what i think must have been the aerial in, so i compensated with soldering it to the point instead.
The moment of truth came. I booted my laptop, and it worked perfectly. I was so chuffed to see my desktop worling perfectly, my internet working, sound working, display, mouse, keyboard etc.
However, within maybe 10 minutes of using my laptop on firefox and such it got increasingly slow. The fan also seemed to be overworking itself. I thought that it might have been due to dust getting trapped during the repair. I decided to give it a little while to cool down, as it had almost ground to a halt at this point, by shutting the lid. I usually do this if the laptop is overworking, so it can 'relax' for a bit (you can tell i really love my laptop! ). This time, however, was the last it seems. When i opened the lid again the laptop was off. It has quite a common problem it seems, as i saw it in another post on this forum ( however, i thought that it might be important to include the repair work i had done on the laptop, so i started it as a new thread, i hope that's okay! ). When the on button is pressed the green light flashes on for a second. The fan and screen are completely unresponsive before it is gone again. After this the light wont even flash until i take the battery out and replace it. I tried immediately cleaning the laptop, taking the battery out and putting it back in, and powering it off the mains with the battery removed. Then i researched further and looked into running the power down by holding the on button down for 30 seconds, but with no avail.
I'm pretty worried that this is the end for my laptop. I have read suggestions that it could be the motherboard, it's certainly not the power as it charges perfectly fine, and is full at the moment (green light whenever it is plugged in). However, as soon as i try and turn it on when it is charging the power seems to completely shut down, and the battery charging light also shuts off. Do you all think it is a motherboard failure, CPU, Overheating, fan issues or anything else? I'd really love to hear your opinion before i start taking it all to bits
Thankyou for your help in advance, and for reading my ESSAY ^-~

Hello & welcome Meere,

The issues you describe sound very much like a motherboard failure to me. Sorry

Hello guys, thankyou very much for the welcome <3!
Update ^^
Well, with very little hope of fixing it i began taking each piece of hardware off to try and find a cause. When i had taken it all off the motherboard worked fine, so i began putting each thing back on individually. It eventually came down the hard drive jack. The laptop would start, but as soon as the hd was moved, or any pressure was put on it the whole laptop shut down. I figured that this was why the laptop wouldn't work when put together as this put pressure on the section of the mother board.
When the hard drive is absent the laptop works fine, but as soon as i plug it in and move it it turns off again It's strange, because the hard drive works individually, as i could plug it into the home computer and retrieve the files, and the jack on the motherboard seems to work with other hard drives?
It's made me very confused, because now i don't know whether to try and get the jack fixed (i bet it will be very expensive), or try running the system by a different means.
I found that you can run an OS from a exterior drive, but many suggest it only works up to XP. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how i could rescue my system? I have tried altering the system settings in the BIOS to run from USB, but that doesn't seem to work. It starts, picks up the hard drive and OS it seems, but shuts as soon as it begins loading windows. I was considering trying to load XP onto the drive (format it and maybe use an old PC to get the OS onto the hard drive and try running that? I'd appreciate any replies guys Thanks a bunch XX

Meere,

I'm going to reOPEN this for the Techs. You've reached a hardware level of experimentation that's beyond me ;-)

btw, I'm *delighted* to hear that you discovered the issue!

Hi Meere with this suspect drive have you ever deleted the partitions and formated and reloaded the O/S to see if it works? I don't think it's the HDD socket on the laptop if it see other drives and if the drive works in another PC the problem could be O/S related.

Haha Thankyou very much for re-opening my post ^^ When I considered I would be spending a £400 on a new laptop I was pretty determined to make mine work :P It's my baby, and i miss it to death! Thankyou for your support ^^
Madmatt, I have not tried that method yet, but it does sound like a very good idea! However, the problem I come to now is how to reload the OS when it is difficult to keep my laptop on :P
That will most definately be my next step though If not i am definately looking at a faulty hard-drive I think. And also I am considering trying to run an XP system on a external hard-drive which I read is possible. It's just going to take lots and lots of experimentation to get there :P
Does anyone have any experiance with this, because i admit i am a little scared >.< haha.
Thankyou so much for your support guys ^^ <3! Mia XX
