Default PSU Upgrade

Hello everyone,

I'm running a HP Pavilion a1747c and I'm planning to upgrade my video card to a 9800 gt. This is the one, Newegg.com - EVGA 512-P3-N862-TR GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards to be exact. I'm just wondering if anyone can help me find a psu that can run this. Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to PCHelpForum.

What size power supply do you have in there now?

I would go for a 600-700 watt PSU.

I will mark your thread "Open" for our Tech Team to help you with your question.

JB.

Hello, Jelly Bean. I opened my case and the psu sticker reads 300w and the model number is HP-D3057FR, so I googled that and came up with this, Newegg.com - HIPRO HP-D3057F3R 300W ATX12V Power Supply - Power Supplies That appears to be the one I have. Thank you for your help.

Hi,

If you are going for a 9x00GT card then JB is right, a PSU above 600w would be a good investment. Try the NewEgg power calculator, here: Newegg - Power Supply Calculator

I agree Hengis,go for the 600 watt should be enough.

Your 300 watt is just not enough power nore will it have the connections you need.

The PSU could possibly die and could cause other hardware issues.

Thanks you guys. I'm searching around and there are quite a few different power supplies. I'm wondering what kind I should buy. My spending limit on this psu is about $70.00, and I'm not sure what type of psu I need as far as connectors and the rail voltage and stuff. I'm really new to shopping for power supplies. Would you guys mind helping me a little more on this? Sorry for my inexperience.

Edit: I meant 9600gt in my first post. Sorry for the typo.
