Default thinkpad battery will not charge

I've bought a new battery, ac adapter, and a dc jack plug but still nothing. The new battery had some juice in it and it worked great until it died and if I remove the battery and just plug it in I get nothing. I know its something to with the charging processing inside but don't know what?.
I have an IBM Thinkpad r51
Thanks
Daniel

Welcome to the PCHF.

This is a hardware problem. Suggest you take the Thinkpad into a good computer shop.

The software can monitor the charge level, but it's hardware that actually recharges the battery.

I tried bringing it it to a pc shop but they said it motherboard is fried and it was pointless to even have them look at it. Then they tried to sell me a new one. I tried calling a few others but they all say that its unfixable and i shop buy a new pc. All these shops are smaller fmaily owned type ones and there are no "good reputation" shops around here to help.
