Talking System Fan at 0° then one day stopped booting up. Need new power supply or a fan?

I'm running Windows XP on an HP Pavilion 735n. I've had problems (esp. in the summers) with the system fan being at 0 speed. I read that in the BIOS. Then a few days ago, it stopped powering up. It started to turn on but then gave serious error message and turned off. It almost let me hit F1 (setup), but then tricked me and shut off.

Since I've known that my system fan has not been functioning, I'm assuming that's what needs to be replaced. The question is: which one is the system fan? I'm having trouble figuring out if 1) the fan fault is power-related, and 2) if it's power-related, then wouldn't it be the CPU fan that would need replacement instead of the system fan?

Hmmm.

I'd very much appreciate any suggestions...

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

Open up your computer while powered off and on the mainboard it will say system fan and numbers.
CPU you fan is labeled CPU fan.

Is the power supply actualy working?

Could you also go to your user CP and fill in your computer details and show other users. This makes things much easier for us to determin your problems.

Power Supply Unit ,Motherboard dead or as Jelly says dodgy cpu fan so the machines shutting down instead of frying. It could already have fried also

Unhappy Re: System Fan at 0° then one day stopped booting up. Need new power supply or a fan

Jelly Bean,

I think the power supply is working, because 1) the computer does turn on for about 10 seconds, and 2) the wireless network is being (routed?) through this PC and the network is running fine

I'll open the computer when I get home. I know that the fan that's not working is in a different location than the CPU.

Thanks for responding

If motherboard fried, wouldn't it have been fried a long time ago? Computer turns on for 10 seconds before shutting off, so does that mean OK power supply?

Thanks

It's a smallish, square black fan towards the back of the computer, next to the power supply unit. The BIOS said (back when I could boot) it was the system fan.

Ok this is could a fan failure?Have you checked it is fully plugged in on the mainboard?
You may need a new fan.

As you said it is powering on but then shutting down?Is the power supply actualy starting up?

Buy a new fan and see if that works to get you up and running.

so its screwed to the case? If so that would not in theory damage the pc. So the pc does not boot at all now? do you get the Post beep?
