Hi, for about half a year now whenever I start my computer - even from standby a hissing noise comes from around my Power Supply Unit area. This noise is not very loud and only normally occurs for around 5 seconds max, although when it was first happening it lasted for all of the booting time. I used a Power Supply Unit calc and I am only using around 220W. My Power Supply Unit is the 300W one here and is really cheep.
Do you think this hissing means anything or the Power Supply Unit could soon fail / cause damage to hardware?

Hi Jake.
Have you looked inside pc while on and see if it is the fan making the noise?Are you sure it is not the cooling for your graphics card?Some graphics cards hiss a little?

I can hear a very very faint hissing noise from the back Power Supply Unit fan when up close, not sure if it's the graphics card though. I will open the case up tomorrow to find out.

I've never heard of hissing video cards, I have heard of hissing PSUs, especially the cheap ones O.o

Generally a hissing sound means a short circuit of some type or other, I'm almost positive it's the Power Supply Unit, my roommate and I have had quite a few of these cheap PSUs to power our various servers and media center PCs and they tend to be really bad quality and hiss or completely die on us.

My recommendations would be to get a new Power Supply Unit, and not a cheap one, you can pickup a decent 300W to 350W PSU for 30$ to 40$, anything cheaper then that and I can almost guarantee it'll be back quality

ok ,the hiss noise seems to be coming from the fan directly below the Power Supply Unit fan i think. If not then it is the Power Supply Unit fan. I hope that if this Power Supply Unit does go then it does before the end of the computer warranty - 6 months

Personally I would just swap the Power Supply Unit and be done with it, but that's just me
