Default Computer is shutting down due to thermal overheating?

I have a pentium D 2.8 processor. I had a standard intel heatsink on before. I recently purchased a thermaltake Silent 775d heatsink to keep it cooler. Last night my PC is working just fine, I pull off my old heatsink and install the new one. I get beeps from the PC and then a blackscreen comes up saying the PC was shutdown due to thermal overheating on the CPU. I cant keep my computer on long enough to check the bios or install speed fan or anything. Did I install my new heatsink incorrectly? I tried snapping it on and off for like a hour and still the same results. I installed a thin layer of thermal compound onto the cpu and removed the old compound.

I bought the new heatsink to avoid this problem!

Any thoughts on what I should do?

Ok.. You installed the new heatsink. Did you remove ALL the old thermal compound? I recommend cleaning it off, using a Paper towel dampened with rubbing alcohol, being careful not to damage the processor, let it dry, apply some Arctic Silver 5, (a rice sized dab in the center of the heat spread on the CPU) put the Heatsink on, and twist it around a little bit to spread it, and then screw it down.

ok you might want to check that the fan is fixed the right way up, some fans blow hot air away from heatsinks some blow directly onto them.
