Default [Resolved] pc overheating and shutting down

Hi there everyone.
My pc shuts down when doing pretty much anything that tests it.. burning dvd, converting video files, streaming to xbox 360 etc.
it wont switch back on for ages either.

i ran speedfan it says this.

my temp sits arund 80 - 90 degrees in bios too before even getting to windows.

i was going to fix it with new fan (if thats what is wrong) and upgrade more ram etc.

But then i saw this X-Blade - Motherboard, 6.0GHz Intel Dual Core, 1GB DDR2 - eBay Motherboards, Desktop PC Components, Computing (end time 15-Oct-07 20:07:52 BST)

it certainly seems like a lot less hassle to swap my hard drive and dvd drive to one of these machines..if i was going to spend money anyway might as well get a dual core out of it. it does seem good value for money..and i was wanting a better pc anyway.
any opinions on my overheating prob and what you think would be best for me to do next?
My current spec is 2.16 ghz Amd athlon 704mb ram

thanks

Hello Macca, welcome to PCHF.

Ouch, those temps are high, even your HDD is borderline.

You'll need to add some cooling which does means extra fans to get that hot air out of your system. Ideally, there should be a fan at the back to extract the hot air, and a fan at the front to bring in the cooler. Make sure your PC isn't clogged with dust and wires, there air should be able to escape your PC easily. Leave a clear space in front of any fans (CPU, GPU) and even the power supply and any other fans to make sure the air can escape. Finally, using thermal grease on your CPU and/or GPU will help with cooling (Thermal Grease for CPU, cpu grease, cpu thermal grease, thermal greese for CPU).

when you say extra fans.. where do you install them.. is it pci? do you think i should replace my current fan on cpu? also do you think instead of doing that would be better to get other pc and just take hard drive and dvd drive from current pc??
thanks for your reply.

No, these fans will normally screw to vents that you currently have on your PC, depending on your PC. If it is a custom built PC, it will normally have area's at the back and the front where you can screw these fans into place. The fans can connect either to fan sockets on your motherboard or using the same 4 pin power connect you use to connect to your CD-ROM.

If your happy with your PC, then there's no real point in buying a new PC for the sake of a couple of fans that only cost a couple of quid! Also, if you descide to move your HDD from your current PC, into your new one, it will need to be installed as an additional HDD. You won't be able to boot to Windows from the same disk without re-installing Windows. Windows will only work on the motherboard hardware it was originally installed on.
