Default CPU power?

Ok so I finaly did it I just spent the money and build a "good" computer, but I do have one problum.

So to save money I got my case from a freind its really cool and it has a power suply, I knew the power supply was know good. But im using it anyway till i get another one.

See my mobo the EVGA 680i SE SLI has an 8pin CPU conector, and my power supply only has a 4pin so I conected the 4pin for now.

So my qestion is:

Is it bad to have only the 4pins or must I have all 8? Also dose this cut down my system preformance?

Im planing to get another supply soon but i just want to know if its good to be running it like this.

Are you saying that you connected the four pin connector into a eight pin socket?
If that is the case, then please disconnect it NOW!

Not only will this degrade the performance of the computer, but it could cause the computer to blow up.

The eight pin pocket requires the eight pin connector. Do not try to use the four pin power supply.

Ok so I cut another 4 pin conector off an old power supply and soldered it to a molex conector. So now all 8 pinns are powered.

But just for kicks, why would it explowed? And have I rowined my computer by running it with only the 4 pins for about two days?

Im really happy with my new computer and it seems to run just fine. I did not even notice a diffrence bettwen having the 4 or all 8 pins. i know they power the CPU but why are there 8?

Hi Justin,

If you don't have a decent power supply...you will never have a decent computer
It was a hard lesson that I learned...blew up my motherboard by doing exactly what you just did...
If you don't have enough power to run everything in your computer, it will cause things to die.

New motherboards and multi-core processors require the 20+4 pin power connector...if you don't have this, it is very dangerous.
If your power supply isn't up to scratch, and you can't afford a new one immediately. Don't use the computer.

The way I recommend people to upgrade computers - is start with a solid power supply...and then go budget on other things, power is the blood of the computer...think of it like our bodies working with not enough blood...we fail...badly.

Hi AW,

New power supplies (decent ones) will come with a bunch of power cables you'll never use
These are because they support older motherboards...you'll likely find the 4 pin connector you need..or an adapter
