Umm... guys while an off-the-shelf surge protector does more than nothing-- it is not MUCH more.
To get any real electrical protection an uninterruptable power supply is needed-- and even those are no real guarantee against lightning (even miles away-- a lightning stike on a power line can fry everything)
A good-quality UPS company actually insures your gear for you-- it's included in the price... I think American Power Conversion's is up to $50,000 US.

@fischecj-- maybe you should get an electrician to chech out the wall-socket-- they do wear out
