Default PC shut down and now wont turn on

Hi everyone,

Long time no see, but again my CPU is bugging me.

The other day my computer shut down with no warning etc. Since then i have been trying to turn it on, but all that happens is the fans move a little (maybe a quarter turn) theres a noise like the computer "wants" to turn on, (not a beep, more of a internal noise for a split second) but nothing happens.

Any ideas?

Help would be fantastic...

Thanks

Barnetti

Hi there mate.

The only assistance I can really offer is open up and check that the connectors are all secure.

To be honest, short of a loose cable somewhere it sounds like either a dead Power Supply or a dead Motherboard.

Hope this helps

Hi, thanks for the quick reply!!

I have a feeling its a dead motherboard, as the same problem occured last year.

The problem therefore is: how easy is it to change a motherboard and how do i know which one to get???

Thanks.

Changing a motherboard isn't too difficult. If you give me the make/model of your computer I can recommend a replacement.

However I would try a different power supply first as if it is the power supply replacing the motherboard will do no good and just leave you out of pocket.

Just out of curiosity do you have any kind of surge protection?

Dont think there is any surge protection, and the computer is a custom job so im not sure where to look to give u the necessary info.

How would i check if its the power supply? Whenever i put the power cable in, there a little electircal "fuzz" noise, which would indicate that theres power there...???

Thanks

It would indicate that there is power getting to the power supply yes, it doesn't indicate that the power supply is regulating and putting out power though.

Basically, there are 3 ways to check if it is the power supply.

1) Buy an ATX power supply tester

2) Jump start' the power supply, this is the cheapest way but could cause damage if you jump the wrong pins.

3) Try a different power supply.

It all depends on what your comfortable with and your budget to be honest.

If you're not too comfortable with swapping things in and out then the best Idea would be to take it in to a shop/ask someone to test it out for ya.
