Default PSU Worries...

Hi all.

Around December last year i spent a bit of cash on this PSU:

Meggydog Computers

I'm now concerned that it may not have enough power to run my rig once ive gotten all the parts for it.

If you hit the dropdown menu under my nickname, you'll see my computers current specs....

The new parts im saving for are a Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme processor:

Anglian Internet Ltd

And (possibly) this new GPU ATI released, the Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI / ViVO Graphics Card

Advance Tec Ltd Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI / ViVO Graphics Card

I say "possibly" because ive heard that this card uses up alot of power (which is why i'm concerned) and hasn't lived up to the hype...so i might just wait till they release the XTX version of the card before i buy. (it'll be a while yet before i can afford it anyway..)

Once i do buy the card, i might actually decide to keep my x1600 pro and use it in "crossfire" with the 2900, if thats possible, ive got two pci-e slots on this commando mobo, so i dont see why it wouldn't work. ive still gotta look into "Crossfire" anyway, i know nothing about it really . This would also use up even MORE power...

Anyway. thanks for the help

Edit---

I think i should mention that my PC's case is a Aspire x-Cruiser case, which has 2 small fans with blue LED's, as well as a additional 6 more LED's for the power lights, door lights, etc.

This is not including the bigger fans for the CPU, and rear of the case

And finally, the case also has three analog gauges on the front, (each with thier own backlights) which measure sound (dB) temperature, and fan speed.

You could go to the PSU calc in my signature... put in everything you want to buy, and see what it comes up with.
Then try it with your 'old' card and compare.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I don't think you are going to hurt your components if you try the upgrades with your current power supply.

What I would do is just upgrade your components until you get to the point that either 1. Your computer won't turn on cause your unit just demands too much power, or 2. You see a crappy framerate and you know for sure your unit should more than overpower the game you're playing.

I don't think it really damages your gear if you underpower it. Unless it is constantly turning off because you just lack power. But I may be wrong cause I'm not an electrician

It really begs the question if there is some kind of easy to understand noober tool or software that you can get to see your power consumption.

Well, with all the upgrades, it recommends a 856w PSU and with my current card, it gives 705watt.

I take it i need to upgrade then?. lol.

I think it's time you bought some stock in your local power company

They have anything you want-- you can even run dual PSU's-- does not look pretty/a wiring mess ... but it works.
