Default URGENT! Compaq Presario 5000 Power Supply Help

Yesterday, the normally green power light began blinking red the turned off. At the same time I smelled a burnt smell. I have data on the harddrive that I need ASAP.

The exact model of my pc is Compaq Presario 5412RSH.

Questions:
  1. Is my unit worth replacing the power supply?
  2. HP parts are very expensive. Can I put an aftermarket power supply in my pc?
  3. If I can't replace the PS how do I get data off of the hard drive?
Thanks,

Hi Merc and welcome to PCHF.

How old is your PC? If it has been operating fine up until now, it may be worth looking into a new PSU. But, if it is an older system, you may want to think about upgrading to a newer PC.

I don't think it would be a problem using an aftermarket PSU, they all do the same thing.

If you do upgrade to a new or newer system, you can retrieve the data from your HD by hooking it up as a secondary drive in the new PC.

Hope I helped!!

Thanks for the reply.

I have an IBM notebook. Can I somehow connect the Presario's HD to the laptop so I can retrieve the data?

Our Presario is about 4 years old.

Merc

You can hook it into an external USB enclosure like these on TigerDirect:

Search Results for external hard drive enclosure at TigerDirect.com

You just put your hard drive inside the enclosure, keeps it safe. They are nice for having a storage drive without having to crack your PC's case open. Just plug it into your USB port on your Laptop, and there is no software to install. Quick and easy.

Well, I put in a new PS and nothing happened. Even if I had one or more internal cables in the wrong place wouldn't the PS just turn on when plugged in?

No, Make sure you check all the relevant cables are in the right place.
