Default Unknown infection of some type on my Vista PC.

Hi,

I am new to this forum and I hope you guys can help. I was using the internet today to download some spyware tools etc, and ever since, when I use windows a small blank dialogue box appears with just one large red circle with an 'x' in it. It won't close by clicking the top right x and has yes/no boxes at the bottom. I click no and then windows dfender tells me that "a program wants to open web content using this program on your computer". The name : windows explorer
Publisher: Microsoft windows
Details : C:\windows\explorer.exe

When I then click on "don't allow" I get the messsage than windows explorer has stopped working (or IE if I am online).

If I now try to use IE, I get a blank page and nothing else, just a white screen with the borders. I am using mozilla for this with no problems.

The small blank dialogue box pops up also when I am browsing 'my computer' and again I get the error message for windows explorer.

I have tried Ad-aware, AVG, spybot scans but all clear. I tried kapersky online scanner and again no result.

When IE stops working I get the following details list of the problem:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

I am running Vista home premium with zonealarm and AVG. Never had any problems before today.

Any help appreciated.

Default Re: Unknown infection of some type on my Vista PC.

Ok. Let's have you download ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for downloading and instructions for running the tool:

Go here ======> A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix <====== Go here

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first. This applies to XP Pro and XP Home users only.If you have SP3 installed you will need to use SP2

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should get a prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

(1) Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
(2) Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review (copy and paste them, not attach), so that we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log

Caution: Never run and remove files with Combofix unless supervised by a qualified security analyst who is experienced in the use of Combofix. Misuse can cause serious computer problems.

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

When I ran the Malwarebytes and cleaned up the selected items, the problem has gone. Could this be the end of the problem or can you see any other problems from the logs?

The combofix suggests windows XP. I am running Vista home premium.

Additionally, I do not have a Vista CD as my PC came with XP loaded, from Dell, and I had a free upgrade to Vista sent to me some months later.

It's OK, Vista doesn't contain the Recovery Console. Proceed with the instructions.
