I cannot get it to work by following the instructions.

Using Google, I have found that combofix is not designed for Vista and could leave it in anunstable condition which might mean system restore.

Is there a need to do this combofix or are there any alternatives?

I need to check back with others regarding this.

The official guide does give instructions for installing and running ComboFix in Vista though.

If you are hesitant on this, wait for my reply.

P.S. do you have UAC disabled?

I have tried following the instructions, but I cannot get it to do anything.

I am a novice with computers so any help is appreciated.

The UAC is not disabled, I don't know how to do it.

Also, when I booted my PC today, the desktop background is black and it won't apply any pictures as backgrounds. Could this be related?

No problem. Since MBAM has worked for you, let's see a new HijackThis log so we can determine what's left of the infection.

My AVG has detected two threats just now. I am unsure what they are or what to do with them. It has put them into the virus vault.

They are:

Trojan horse dropper.agen.KGK in C:\users\colin\downloads\c-setup.exe

Trojan horse dropper.generic.VUZ in C:\users\colin\AppData\local\temp\install1\setup.e xe
