Default VB and laptops

hey, haven been around lately but yeah... Just want some advice,

next year im starting year 11 and have been requested by teh school to purchase a laptop for programming (assuming it's VB 6.0 possible .net.. but doubt anything else as that's all i've been using since year 9).

The laptop they've offered is a Dell lenovo ThinkPad T61 which is $2000 AUD off them ($1450 off Dell) and as i have a good enough computer to do the programming at home and only want something for inclass, i dont want to spend that much. In fact i want to keep it below $1000 AUD if possible (2nd hand laptop is a possibility if i can find one).

Can anyone suggest a decent laptop in this price range, and also i need to know recommended system requirements for VB.

A lot of people are saying decent dual core and 2gb of RAM, but our school computers are like 1gb ram max... and probably P4's and they run it fine. slow but fine. And any laptop these days would have a dual core anyway. So TBH i'm taking this all on as absolute BS but i trust u guys more so yeah >.<

Pretty much anything would be fine for that, VB6 was released in 1998 so will run on almost anything.

I program in C/C#/Java on occasion which up until a month or so was done on an IBM Thinkpad T23 with a 1.2ghz processor and 1g ram which did fine.

Having looked at the Dell Aus site they are offering an Inspiron 6400 with a dual core processor, 2g ram and a 160gb drive for $999 delivered which would fit the bill fine, if you want something cheaper have a look for something used, don't worry too much about specs almost anything will be fine for VB programming, even .net should be fine.
