Default Core I7 920

Hi all,

I've ordered a core i7 (still waiting because of royal mail) and I have been doing research on temperatures for the Core-i7 920 , I was shocked that they extended into the 50's and 60's.

So What is the maximum temperature that an 920 can take , like e8400 has temperature threshold of 70ish'c.

I also am thinking of getting a Titan Fenrir , but I heard that watercooling would be more suitable, but I have never used watercooling and .... um not really confident with the idea of it. I had the idea of a Domino COOLIT ALC.

p.s If I got fingerprints on my cpu top , would it affect temps.
Thanks.

Hello Bindo, welcome back!

An i7 eh...lucky man! That will be the next processor in my next build I think, always been an AMD man so a big step!

Anyways, as far as temps go I am unsure so I have marked this as open for others to give input!

Regards,

That's normal for an i7

Ideally you'd want to keep it under 70C. i7 920 Specifications

I've experimented with the Domino Coolit ALC and the overall result was that I achieved almost the same cooling using an OCZ Vendetta 2 and in fact kept the motherboard NB area cooler in doing so because when you use the Domino you are in fact removing the CPU fan from the case and it does help in cooling the motherboard. My system temps went up about 5C because I removed the CPU fan when the Domino was in place and I did not like that.

I doubt it would do much to your temps but nonetheless fingerprints are not a good thing to have on metal components because we have acid in our bodies and leaving it there can actually etch the surface which you do not want.

If you've gotten fingerprints on it clean them off with a clean cloth and alcohol and remember to touch parts by their edges and keep your hands off of contacts as well.

From the Arctic Silver website:

"Keep the surfaces free of foreign materials and do NOT touch the surfaces, a hair, piece of lint, and even dead skin cells can significantly affect the thermal interfaces performance. In addition, oils from your fingers can adversely affect the performance by preventing the micronized silver fill from directly contacting the metal surfaces. (Fingerprints can be as thick as 0.005")"

The thermal spec on that Intel site is more of what you want to aim for. My overclocked 920 never really goes over 70, but I've got some heavy air cooling on it. I've read on other forums that the max temp for this CPU is 100c. The TjMax that's shown in RealTemp is 100, so I think 85-90 is about the absolute MAX you want your CPU to be hitting - but even then, you should do something about that temp.

If you're intent on water cooling, it's great - but not easy. You really have to be careful of leaks too - it would be a VERY costly mistake to forget to tighten a clamp or something. My advice - I grabbed a Scythe Mugen 2 and strapped two 120mm Slipstream High-Output fans on it. At 4Ghz, under 100% load, I don't go much over 70c. You could even grab the "very"high output fans, pumping out over 100cfm each and cool it even more, with a noise level tradeoff.
