hello wd,
although the reported temps would not be considered dangerous,if you wish to get the temps down further, then, i would say look into getting a better heatsink and cooling fan, a case fan too wouldnt go amiss , i have seen a few reports saying that upon upgrading to win7 from xp and vista some users have seen up to a 5 degree increase in cpu temps.
are the ram sticks you have exactly the same ?
did you have them both installed when you ran memtest86?

I not a guru, but it is not unusual for my cpu to operate at temps around 53c give or take. I have a threashold set for 70c. I have seen years ago where a bad capacitor on the MB caused shut downs also. Wouldn't hurt to take a close look at them make sure none are swollen or leaked out. I aslo have heard of shut down restarts from win7 updates.. some where's in the threads here..

Ok, thanks for the advice on the CPU temp guys. I really didn't know what "acceptable" temps for a processor were, and thuoght those might be too high.

But I think I've managed to fix my problem, at least temporarily. Whenever I would stick mu second stick of RAM into the corresponding slot (1+3, 2+4 right?) it would turn off. But, when I took out the second stick, it would work. So, I put the stick into the second slot, not the third, and it's been working fine for over an hour and a half. I think possibly that the motherboard slot was blocked/broken, and that was causing the RAM to dump everything. Does this sound plausible? I think that's really the problem.

hi wd
this sounds very plausible, do you have a manual for your board as it would probably be an idea to check for certain if they should be next to each other in a certain configuration, alternativly as you say you may well have a slot down on the board,
how long usually was it before it had a shutdown with the stick in the other slot ?

Well, the manual sez to put it in 1+3, and than 2+4. However, when I left it in 1+2, it didn't have any errors, and it works pretty well.

And to answer your second question, it would last well into startup, and I often could open up Safari and come to this board before it might give out. I once played Wolfenstien for about an hour and a half, but every other time it took less than 45 minutes.

hi wd
well if its now working since you changed it to 1+2 and it not shut down on you then it would seem like that must have been the issue maybe like you thought a dead slot, is there anything else we can assist you with ?
would you consider this resolved ?

regards
fixit
