Default Upgrading CPU

I need a little advice, I want to upgrade my CPU.

I have Emachine W6409, with Windows XP, the CPU is a Pentium 4 531 3 GHz socket LGA775, I would like to know if the stock mother board will support this CPU..."Intel Pentium E6300 Wolfdale 2.8GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor, Model BX80571E6300"

I know just enough about computors to add most hardware and software, but I don't know how to determine what the motherboard will support, Emachine's support is of very little help, without paying them for the motherboard specs.

Thanks for any advice,

Au Seeker

I'll make an educated guess and say No, your board will not support an e6300. Among other reasons, the 'new' e6300 has a 1066MHz FSB and your board supports 533/800MHz FSB CPU's.

A quick Google search found this motherboard info:

Gateway / eMachines 4006149R, D102GGC2 Motherboard Grant County 2

4006149R | Gateway Grant County 2 4006149r Mboard

Cobracon,

Thanks for your reply!

After posting here I was able to find info on my mother board and found as you stated that at best it would only support a Pentium D CPU.....HMMM time to upgrade the motherboard and even a better CPU than the E6300.

Thank agian,

Don't forget that if you swap your motherboard, any Windows Recovery CD you have will not work as they are designed to install Windows on the specific hardware your computer was shipped with.

You may have to buy a new copy of Windows........

Hi

Keep in mind what Tootech pointed out, because you will face it eventually.

To go around that, check what system from eMachines supports the CPU you want to install, and then go buy that mainboard, you should be OK then.
