Exclamation Looking to upgrade my CPU. Need advice!

Hi.
I've just aquired a pc that has an MSI Medion MS-6747 mobo (Springdale i865). It currently has a P4 3.06ghz cpu with 2GB PC3200 DDR RAM (which is a step up from the 2.8ghz old Celeron I had!) but even tho Vista Upgrader says I can do it, I'm thinking of getting a Core 2 Duo/Dual core cpu to run vista smoothly.

Q: Will this mobo be compatible with these chips? And is it worth upgrading or is this P4 3.06 a decent processor?

Thnx in Advance.

Hello,I could be a little wrong on this but a dual core socket 478 for this mainboard only goes upto 2.0 ghz per core.I do not think it is worth the upgrade realy.

I have a Compaq computer with single intel 2.8 ghz CPU with just over a gig of RAM running Vista Ultimate 32 bit and it runs smoothly. No problems with it at all boots up and runs great.

You got a 3.0 GHZ wich should also run Vista great with the amount of RAM it has now.

Just a couple of things - a dual core pc cpu is socket 775. Your motherboard is socket 478. Dual core socket 478 cpu's are for laptops not pc's.

I would look at getting a new motherboard if you want to update the CPU. But otherwise as Jelly Bean said - you should have no problems installing and running and Vista on that PC.

Jelly Bean agrees: New MB and CPU maybe worth the upgrade.

Its a half decent machine it will run Vista no problem I see no reason to upgrade mainboard or CPU.

Just install Vista make sure it is fully updated via Microsoft updates, drivers, chipset,BIOS etc before installing SP1.
