Default Pentium D not being too smart

Hey,

I was under the impression that a dual core processor is supposed to share the tasks evenly. So like both processors might be at like 50%.

I've noticed that my processors do share the tasks sometimes, but I still see one processor at 100% and the other at 0.5% sometimes. I was just doing a defragmentation when I saw it doing that.

I just want to check if my cpu is being stupid or if it's supposed to be like that sometimes.

It really depends on the software, Windows will try to split tasks across multiple cores, but sometimes some programs will only make use of 1 core and won't care how many cores you have.

Not all software makes use of dual core processors and won't benefit. You can set affinity in task manager by right clicking the process and telling it the core you want the software to use. This can be useful if running multiple applications, thats where dual core helps anyway.

Both my cores differ

Edit: Grrr DL

Hehe.. Beat you to it

Although it also depends on what OS you use, I've seen XP Pro make better use of dual/quad core then XP Home, and obviously Vista is able to make the most of multi-core/multi-CPU systems. You can try setting different core affinities like Upgrader said, though sometimes the programs aren't too happy switching between cores if they're programmed to only use one core.

I simply say a dual core or quad works like this?.

1st core for a game runs say 50%
2nd core for IE fluctuates between 1-5% while idle.May rise when clicking or opening a new page.

Dual and quads dont exactly share the process,s they run individual ones or combined as if you had 2 diffrent CPUs or 4 CPUs installed. They each have there own task to perform.

I know this can be explined a lot more technical but I simplified it.This is not technicaly correct but thats how I have to explain it to friends.

We're trying to break a record I say

Work splitting is heavily OS based, if you take a look at Server OSes (such as Windows Server 2003), they have a tendency to be extremely efficient at splitting workloads across all available CPUs/Cores
