Hello,

I'm running Win XP home on a Dell Dimension 9100. PC is about 3 yrs old. All was fine until the last 5 months or so. Now, everything is a "big deal" it seems for my CPU. If I click a red X to close out a window......it goes blank (turns white)....then the hard drive goes nuts for about 10-20 seconds and THEN it finally closes. The longer I've used the window the longer it takes to close it for some reason. I run Bit Defender and Spy Sweeper regularly and seem to be virus free. What do you guys think could be the problem? Thanks much in advance.

Could you please post your system specs for us?
Actually, to make it easier, please go to "User CP" above and click on "Edit Options", then fill out the "My PC" spec boxes at the bottom of the page, make sure the option to allow others to view your system specs says "Yes", then click "Save Changes". It will show your system specs under a little tab that says "My PC" that's displayed under your username, like mine. It's a big time saver for myself and the rest of the staff and it allows us to help you much faster.

If you need help finding these, I can assist you in that

OK, Zachary......giving it a try. Moving around in system....finding some but not all info. I haven't upgraded from the stock Dell parts supplied w/ my 9100. Will go back to Control Panel and Properties display and see what I can learn re: make/model of sound card & video card. -Art

Try this:
Download Everest Home: |MG| EVEREST Free Edition 2.20
Install & run it. I'll walk you through getting each spec:
CPU: Click on "Motherboard", then "CPU", put what it says next to "CPU Type"
Motherboard: Click on the second "Motherboard" link on the left menu, put what it says next to "Motherboard Name"
Memory: (there are two steps here) First step: Click "Memory" on the left menu and put what it says next to "Total", then click "SPD" on the menu and put what it says next to "Memory Type" and "Memory Speed"
Video: Click "Display" on the menu then click "Windows Video", put what it says next to "Device Description" and "Memory Size"
Sound: Click "Multimedia" on the menu and then click "PCI/PnP Audio", put what it says as the first one, if nothing appears probably have onboard sound, in which case just put that
The rest, OS, Monitor, ISP is pretty straight forward

It seems your computer origonaly came with 512 RAM/Memory,although I am getting conflictiong evicence of this.

If you only have 512 fitted I sugest you upgrade to 1-2 gig RAM.

This will help your CPU enourmasly.

Especialy if you play higher spec games.

Also I know you say your PC is clean,however you could do this pre-work and post results back here to rule out any infections.

Or a repair install could be the answer?

Perform a Repair Installation

Check your settings in your BIOS,maybe some thing is not set right?

Yes more RAM especilay if you are playing higher spec games.

I have 1.24 RAM fitted and I do not play games,it makes my PC run a lot smoother and quicker.

I looked up your system at Crucial.com for memory, you can have up to 4gb of DDR2 memory up to PC2-6400 speed
So, you might consider getting one of these for 2GB (which should be enough) or 2 for 4GB
