[Fixed] Is there something wrong with my processor?
Three of four lights on the back are red. I knew I should of listened to myself when I told myself I'm probably going to break it. Anyway, what I did was lift the levers on the heatsink, then I was fidgeting with it for a bit because I couldn't get it off. So I put it back on and turned it back on and the lights were red. After that I took the whole heatsink off, cleaned off the dirty chip with a alcohol pad, put the heatsink back on, connected the wires, then turned it back on. No difference. Could somebody clue me in to what's wrong?
Thank you.

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
when you cleaned it off did you reapply thermal paste between the CPU and heat sink? Is the PC making any beeping noises?

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
No, I didn't have any, sadly. I didn't clean the paste off of the heatsink, though. There wasn't really any on the chip itself so, I thought that would be OK. My PC doesn't make any beeping noises.

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
Hello again V3x. I would remove the heatsink again, clean it off very well using Rubbing alcohol, (the rag/whatever soaked in it. Allow it to dry before re-inserting into the motherboard, being very careful not to damage any of the pins on the bottom of it. In fact, check to make sure none of them are bent or broken off. Then reinsert it. Buy some Arctic Silver 5, (clean off the heatsink as well) Apply a thin layer to the processor IHS, and put the heatsink back on. What sort of problems did you have getting it off?

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
I don't have any thermal paste. Is there any kind of household substitute I could use for two days or do I not need any for now? What sides of the chip do I clean off?

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
No. You will have to purchase some. Newegg.com - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM
uh, you clean it off the top.. The part that hte heatsink contacts. First, lets try to eliminate the processor as the problem before you go and spend money on it when you will just end up needing to buy a new processor anyway. Look inside your case, And try to find a set of jumpers, labeled CLR CMOS, or CMOS or something like that. Flip it over for 2 minutes, flip it back, and try using your computer agian. (the computer must be off when doing this or you can severely damage your motherboard)

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
I don't think I have them. I'm running a MSI 6580.

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
Ok, lets find out what those LEDs stand for. Which LEDs are on? And i need a bit more information on your motherboard. (specific model, and chipset name if available)

Re: Is there something wrong with my processor?
MSI Computer Corp. - Support
ok it seems to be that the memory is not installed properly. Remove it, and re-insert it. You will need to re-apply Thermal paste, since you removed the heatsink, or your processor will run dangerously hot. Purchase this Newegg.com - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM
Then i will instruct you in how to install it.
