I have an older computer with an AMD 1800+, 256 Ram, 60GB, etc etc. With its limited capabilities, I dont do many CPU intensive tasks, per se. This thing doesnt even have a video card.

That being said, can I remove this miniature fan mounted on top of the processor? It is incredibly loud and hums a constant, annoying sound. I've tried all types of things (SpeedFan, clean it, etc) to quiet it down but have not found a solution thus far.

Would my CPU just fry without this thing or might I be OK without it as I just surf the web and read emails?

Oh yes your CPU would most certainly fry very quickly without a fan, you really do need one, those processor heat up particularly fast. Why not replace the fan, they only cost a couple of $'s?
