Default Intermittent CPU Noise

This is my first post here so if I am in the wrong subforum or I have formatted this wrong please forgive me and lend me your superior expertise with my problem.

My computer (specs are listed in my profile if I did that right) has not been upgraded or touched inside for months when it began making a constant buzz for 30-60 minutes at a time. I took off the casing and examined/listened for where the buzzing was taking place and found the location (I am not positive what it is called but I have taken a image of it and circled the problem area, I believe it may be called the processor socket). I
still had it under warrenty (this occurred 15 days before the 3 year warrenty would end) and so I took it to Best Buy to fix. When I took it to them, the noise had stopped. So it was hard to convince them of a problem when it would not repeat itself. The technician said it could be the power supply and so he replaced it with a brand new one. I went home and after 30 minutes of use the problem returned. The next day I returned to Best Buy and told them the issue had returned, when I showed it to the new technician I was afraid the noise would hide again, however this time it did show itself. Strangely enough the buzzing was only half the intensity of what the buzzing was like at home. The technicians said they would do a detailed check on it and if they discovered any problem they would fix it. They could not find anything specifically wrong with it but they thought they could smell a burnt wire and maybe that was what I was hearing, so they replaced the wire. I went home and found the noise had stopped. Two weeks later the noise has returned, except instead of being a constant noise it is an intermittent buzzing.

Again, I listened for where the noise was occurring and sure enough it was coming from the processor socket(?)/same area. I have no idea what could be causing this and would very much appreciate any assistance. I have included a .wav file of the noise (in a .rar) and a .jpg which shows the location of the noise. Finally, I am positive it is not coming from the fan (I stopped the fan from running and the noise continued), so I believe it is whatever it is that is behind the fan.

Thanks in advance!

Default Re: Intermittent CPU Noise

to PCHF.

It is possible that the Thermal Gel that was applied between the CPU and its heat sink has dried and it is the dried gel that is causing electrical sparks and thereby making the noise.

Solution: Clean the old gel off and apply some good thermal gel.
