[Disscussion] Intel 45nm Penryn... Worth the wait?
Well, here we are, the 2nd generation of the Core 2 Architecture. The penryn. Following intels plans for a new Architecture every 4 years, with a Update every 2. The penryn has shown in preliminary benchmarks to be a very powerful contender, outperforming even the Excellent C2Ds of the same clock speed. This can be attributed to excellent updates to the new Core. A shrink to the 45nm process will lower the power consumption, and thermal ratings, however intel has yet to release the numbers on that yet. Also, an increase in L2 Cache, 6MB for the Dual core, equating to 3MB per core, and increase from 4 on the Conroe. Also, Intel has lowered the Cache's Latency significantly. In addition to that, the semiconductor giant has made the new cpus cache a 24way set associative, a major improvemnt over hte Conroes 16way set. Also, the new Penryn supports SSE4. so, is Intels latest flagship processor worth the wait? Is it going to displace the Conroe? Post your thoughts please. thanks
