Unhappy Computer in reboot loop

My desktop computer won't completely start up. When I turn on the compter it does a disk check. When the disk check is complete, my desktop icons will come up, but only for about 30 to 45 seconds and then the computer automatically restarts and this cycle continues over and over and over again until I do a hard shut down to turn off the computer. I do get a Microsoft message window that comes up on the desktop just before the computer reboots itself. It states "This system has recovered from a serious error." I may have caused this reboot loop by opening a suspect mail and clicking on a link.

1. What version of Windows are you using?

2. During bootup, press the F8 key.
This should allow you to bootup into the Safe Mode.

3. If you can boot into the Safe Mode, shutdown from the Safe Mode normally. Then, try to bootup normally.

Please, let us know if this works or not.

Booting up in Safe Mode doesn't seem to help.

I was able to bootup in Safe Mode and shutdown normally from safe mode, but when I bootup normally, I have the same problem. The computer will immediately go into a disk check mode and then the desktop icons will come up for several seconds and then the computer will reboot itself all over again.

My operating system is Window XP.

If you have your XP CD handy, put it in your CD Rom drive, restart the PC allow it to boot from the CD and then run a repair install.

I can't locate my XP cd. Is there something else I can try?

Well i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you cant get into Windows via the normal means or safe mode, you will have to bite the bullet and reformat.
